NCFIE hosted the annual Trauma Informed Care – Positive Youth Development Summit on February 16, 2017. Over 200 attendees joined us to learn about the 5 Youth Thrive Protective and Promotive Factors that increase the likelihood that adolescents will develop into healthy, thriving adults; and how a trauma informed community can create positive outcomes for youth.

We welcomed keynote addresses from successful former foster youth who have gained national prominence, including Derek Clark, Ashley Rhodes-Courter, and Josh Shipp.

Derek Clark

Derek Clark is an inspiring speaker and trainer has been featured on Headline News, The Steve Harvey TV Show, The Ricki Lake Show and other shows around the world.

He has recently become a viral video sensation with his “Rapping Dad” videos which have had millions of views and have been featured on Best of Instagram and Vine. He is the author of six books including “Never Limit Your Life” “Disable The Label” and the “I Will Never Give Up” book series.

Ashley Rhodes-Courter, MSW

Ashley Rhodes-Courter is an internationally recognized former foster youth.
Ashley has been featured on The Today Show, Good Morning America, Nightline, Nancy Grace, ABC Primetime, Montel Williams, and other national media outlets.

She hosted a television program called “Explore Adoption” which was produced by the State of Florida to raise the public’s awareness of foster children in need of loving and permanent homes. This segment won an Emmy in 2009.

Josh Shipp

Josh Shipp is an author, global youth empowerment expert, and acclaimed speaker. A former at-risk foster kid turned youth advocate, he is renowned for his documentary TV series (A&E), that followed his ground-breaking work with teens.

He is the author of the national bestseller “The Teen’s Guide to World Domination“, and was listed on Inc. Magazine’s 30 under 30 list. He is a recognized teen expert for media outlets as MTV, CNN, FOX, The New York Times, 20/20, Good Morning America.
